A Step-By-Step Approach To Teaching Film Scoring With Your Students

Delve into the exciting world of film scoring and jingles. Explore composing, arranging, recording and editing music whilst synchronising sound to visuals.
The session will start by investigating the film scoring process by examining the roles of the music team: composer, editor, orchestrator and copyist.
Using short films, we’ll create our own movie soundtracks by adding sound effects, creating mood music and character themes. We’ll also learn about hit points/time markers, cues and cue sheets, time code, scrubbing and synching and discuss a step-by-step approach to teaching film composition with your students. Attendees will leave with a set of resources including lesson plan ideas.
Skills covered include:
  • importing a video
  • playback and some shortcuts
  • all about snapping and when to use it
  • searching for, and adding sound effects
  • placing and editing sound effects
  • adding background music
  • fade-ins and fade-outs
  • using volume envelopes
  • panning
  • muting and soloing tracks
  • editing audio
  • recording MIDI
  • transposing audio and MIDI
We’ll also discuss ways you can expand your content library: places to find legal music loops, sound effects and videos.
