Part 3 of a 5-part series
This is the third installment of the Audacity Tutorials for Music Teachers series and this time we tackle how to change the key (pitch) or the tempo of a song. It’s really simple to do – give it a go!
The other tutorial videos can be found here:
- Part 1 – How to import audio and playback your track like a ninja
- Part 2 – How to shorten a song and add a fade-in or fade-out
- Part 3 [You are here] – How to change the key or tempo of a song (below)
- Part 4 – How to remove a verse or chorus
- Part 5 – How to remove vocals from a song

hi katie
do you have any recommendations for changing the tempo when you don’t know the original bmp. i have an apace i want to make faster but can only estimate the bpm. can you think of a work around?
love your website
dan
Hi Dan,
I just usually use the slider in the Change Tempo dialog – drag it to the right a little and then click the Preview button to listen to the new faster tempo to see if it’s what you want. Then adjust if necessary.
The other option is to work out the tempo of the piece with a metronome app: tap along in time on the metronome app while the piece of music plays (or while you think of it in your head) and the app will tell you the number of beats per minute. Apps I use for this include the online metronome here, the tempo setting in GarageBand on iPad or one of the many metronome apps that are available.
Hope that helps!
Katie
